The 5 peaks Challenge………………....the event of a lifetime!!

Please find below answers to some of the most frequently asked questions...please do not hesitate to contact joanna@advocateevents.co.uk should your question not be in the list below.

How fit should I be?
This challenge is a full on, mentally and physically exhausting event, but fantastically exciting and exhilarating. There is an element of keeping on the move with limited time to stop and enjoy your surroundings but a fantastic feeling of achievement when the event is completed.

Anybody with a reasonable level of fitness and determination will be able to complete the event. Whilst a serious undertaking and not to be taken lightly, 98% of all participants complete with the right amount of training beforehand. We recommend you begin to train and prepare prior to the event in order for you to enjoy this challenge. A fitness guide will be sent to you upon receipt of your registration form and fee. If you have pre-existing injuries or medical conditions we strongly recommend that you visit your GP to ensure you are able to undertake the challenge.
Who can take part in this challenge?
The Five Peaks Challenge is open to people of all ages and abilities. The minimum age to take part is 14 years, and those under the age of 18 must be accompanied at all times by a responsible adult. We request that there is at least one adult present for every two participants under 18.
Can I take my dog on the challenge?
Unfortunately not...whilst we are dog lovers here at Advocate Events and are working on dog related events we have to consider all participants who may not wish to share a minibus with our canine friends!
What support is available for this event?
Advocate Events staff will meet you at the agreed pickup point and will be with you for the duration of the event. Our Mountain Leaders are fully qualified, vastly experienced and great company. They are also trained First Aiders. You will also have full support on the ground during the event. Advocate Events staff have organised and participated in many similar challenges so rest assured you are in safe hands! Although the event is designed to challenge you, we will not put anyone’s safety at risk and support will be available at all times. The Advocate Events team is on hand every step of the way, to help and advise you. We will also accompany you on your return to an agreed drop off point after your challenge.
How many people will I be walking with?
This will depend on the number of climbers that sign up for the challenge. Each group is allocated a guide/s. There are no fast or slow groups and everyone comes off the mountain as a group.
How high are the mountains?
Ben Nevis is 1344m, Scafell Pike 978m, Snowdon 1085m, Slieve Donard 850m and Carrauntoohil 1,038m
How long does it take to climb each mountain?
This depends very much on the speed of your group and other factors such as weather etc however last year it took climbers on average 5h20m to climb up and down Ben Nevis, 4h05m for Scafell Pike and 4 hours for Snowdon and  Slieve Donard, 6h15m for Carrauntoohil.
Are there toilet facilities on the mountains?
There are facilities at the base of each mountain and a cafe at the top of Snowdon (if open). If you are caught short on the mountains our guides will discreetly show you where to go!
What is the terrain like?
All the mountains have well defined paths up to the respective summits, however for the most part they are steep and uneven and made up of steep steps cut into the mountainside for the best part of the climbs. All are fairly well defined in clear conditions but people do get lost in mist or darkness.
Will I be climbing or walking?
With the exception of a small section of Scafell Pike that you may have to use your hands as support in order to scramble up and down, all the routes you will undertake are on well-marked paths.
How will I get there?
You will be responsible for getting to the agreed pick up point on your first day and home from an agreed point at the end of your challenge. All transport from the first agreed pickup point, between the mountains, return ferry crossing and to the final drop off point is arranged for you. Advocate Event staff will be there to meet you at the agreed pickup point.
Is my transport to Snowdon and home from the ferry port in the UK covered in the event fee?
Yes. Depending on your chosen option we will arrange for you to travel by train or in the MPV to the hotel near Snowdon and either a flight to a UK airport or the MPV to an agreed drop off point after the event.
What is the accommodation like?
We will stay in comfortable accommodation on the night before the challenge and the final night of the challenge. You will be sharing a room with an ensuite-bathroom. Rooms are twin and double occupancy. There are a small number of single rooms which carry single supplement charges, should one be requested. Rooms are based on single sex occupancy; couples where possible will be kept together. As our challenge date approaches we will ask you whether there is someone in particular that you would like to share a room with. Many people come to these events on their own. Taking part in events such as these are a great way to meet new people and have proven in the past to build long standing friendships. For those of you arriving on your own, Advocate Events will endeavour to pair you up with another walker of the same sex and similar age.
Do I need a passport?
Yes. You will need a valid passport to enter the Republic of Ireland and to return to the UK.
What weather can I expect?
As with any outdoor event, we are unable to predict the weather so each participant must be prepared for all eventualities. You will need to carry full wet weather gear and warm layers with you on the day of the challenge. The weather conditions at the bottom of the mountains may be vastly different to what we can expect at the top. In the past we have encountered everything from sunshine, snow and rain. A detailed weather forecast will be provided for us during the safety briefing before your ascent. Should there be adverse weather conditions, we reserve the right to cancel or change the route for safety reasons.

We also advise you take out adequate travel insurance should you become injured or unwell and have to cancel the trip after the cancelation period stated in your Terms and Conditions.

Your insurance should be in place when you register to participant so you can make a claim for the costs we have paid out on your behalf and take a place on a future event.

We will be on hand to help and advise you.Drinks, meals during the challenge and mountain snacks Your spending money personal travel insurance personal items from the kit list
How will I raise the sponsorship money?
Although we ask you to commit to raising the minimum sponsorship to take part in this challenge, fundraising needn't be daunting or hard work! Once you start telling people what you're doing and why, you will be amazed at people’s generosity and support. When you sign up we will send you an invaluable fundraising pack bursting with ideas to get you started. This is a great way to meet new people and get in touch with old friends. All it takes is a little inspiration and organisation and the money will begin to roll in. Think about your hobbies and interests - they could be the key to your success! A great tip is to breakdown your sponsorship target into smaller, bite-sized chunks and be proud of what you are doing.
What if I fail to achieve the required sponsorship amount?
Follow our fundraising guide to the letter and YOU WILL SUCCEED. We are also on hand to help and advise you prior to the event. You must achieve the agreed sponsorship to participate in the event.
Is it ethical for me to pay for my trip through sponsorship?
Good question! The answer is quite simply YES! By undertaking an event you are raising money for your chosen good cause that otherwise they may not have received! In addition you are promoting your chosen good cause both before during and after the event!
When do I have to pay for my trip?
If you have chosen to:
Self-fund your challenge completely in a one off payment or Pay by instalments or Self-fund your challenge and choose to fundraise for one of our charity partners or the charity of your choice.
Your event fee must be with Advocate Events three months before the event.
If you have chosen to Fundraise 100% of the agreed target.

Who can I contact before the event with any queries?
